Explore the Western Mediterranean from Gibraltar to Denia, it is a 350nm coast passage, including some of the most densely developed tourism complexes in Europe. Marinas are conveniently spaced a short day trip apart, however in peak season frequently fill early, and some are more expensive than others. There are few sheltered anchorages so planning ahead is essential. Larger towns with good flight connections offer less expensive berths and make attractive wintering spots with an exceptionally dry climate.

Crowds decorate the sophisticated north coasts and islands of the west Mediterranean, where the cost of living  is similar to UK. The western med has an array of open air life, café culture, beautifully presented old towns, superb cuisine, fine wines and fine beaches. There are many marinas to choose from with varied prices. Yes, unattractive developments have also evolved to serve mass tourism, but these are easily avoided especially on a yacht. Approach swimming beaches with care, and keep outside buoyed swimming areas. Lacking any markings, maneuvering  under motor or anchoring closer than 500m where there are swimmers can be a (finable) offense.

From Denia northwards is a more attractive coast of passage, about 250nm to the French border. Valencia and Barcelona are great cities well worth a visit, attractive for wintering. Further north, the Costa Brava is attractive, with many small coves, some lovely beaches and a pleasant open air café life.
